Brucy’s hair loss

Cat experts, I need your advice! Last weekend, I noticed that Brucy is losing hair. She is only losing hair between her eyes and ears but the loss is quite significant. There are no red spots, no irritation, no marks.. Due to hair loss, you can now see her brown pigmentation spots but that’s normal, right?

I checked her ears and it doesn’t seem like she has ear mites. She doesn’t “excessively groom” herself (that could cause hairloss) and we haven’t changed her food recently. She acts normally but you can distinctly tell that she is losing fur! She is only 2.5 years old, so it’s a bit early to be losing hair because of age.

We will see the vet this weekend but meanwhile, maybe someone has advice? She hasn’t been stressed recently so I really have no clue what is happening!

  1. Some kind of allergy would be my guess…..not sure if you have a pollen issue where you are – we sure do here – it’s the WORST year for pollen ever (they say it’s because winter was so awful they think the trees are “overcompensating”!!). Anyway, if nothing else in her world has changed, maybe it’s an allergy. Will be anxious to hear what the vet has to say!

    Hugs, Pam

    1. Thank you so much Pam – considering how polluted Paris is, I also think that it might be a pollen/pollution allergy.. But poor Brucy – she always has something happening to her!!!
      hugs & kisses xxxxxx

  2. it doesn’t look bad to me. You said there are no red spots so I wouldn’t worry. Cody has allergies and gets hot red spots, he also has lost more hair than that. I think you are ok. Pam is correct that it is a bad allergy year though but you don’t live in the U.S.

    1. I know it doesn’t look as bad as it could, but just seeing her lose hair like that all of a sudden makes me so upset!!! I’ll keep you updated on what the vet says on Saturday! xxxxx

  3. It’s a good thing you have an appt with the vet. I agree with Sammy that is could be some sort of allergy, or my other guess was something to do with her thyroid? Our dog started losing patches too and it turned out to be her thyroid, so she got meds she takes x 2 a day and it grew back and she has been doing fine. The only other reason I can think of is some kind of reaction to stress or anxiety. Has anything about your or her routine changed recently? Have you had to spend more time than usual away from home? Most vets will recommend Feliway Air Diffusers or Rescue Remedy to help calm the cat, as well as quality time spent everyday with the cat, and if other methods don’t work sometimes oral medication like Prozac are required.
What a mystery dear Brucy, please do let us know what they say. Purrs of love to you.

    1. Thank you lovely for all your support!! Our vet is really good and she’s known Brucy for a long time now, so I am hoping she will be able to diagnose her correctly.. I read too that it could be thyroid but I have no idea how this can be checked?? Normally there hasn’t been any stressful changes for her, but recently, she also started attacking me violently in the evenings.. Maybe she does need more cuddles and attention??
      ahhh poor Brucy!!xxxx

  4. It’s good she’s going to the vet. I had a cat who lost hair once and the poor thing turned out to be diabetic, which my vet said is very unusual in cats. Good luck!

    1. Thank you!! I think it really depends on where the cat loses hair- apparently between ears ans eyes can only be a skin infection or age hair loss! Xxx On May 17, 2014 10:48 PM, “The Paris Cat” wrote:

      1. After I wrote that I noticed the date and that you had already figured it out. It’s good that it wasn’t more serious. We love our furrbabies!

      2. Yes according to her vet it is an age thing! Its good that its nothing more serious:) On May 18, 2014 2:47 PM, “The Paris Cat” wrote:
